To Whom Can You Transfer Ownership Of A Vehicle?
When a vehicle is transferred between any of the following relatives, the retail sales tax is waived:
A spouse, a parent, a stepparent, a grandmother, a granddaughter, a step granddaughter, a son or daughter-in-law, a father or mother-in-law, or a sibling, half-sibling (siblings with a shared parent), or adopted siblings are all examples of family members (siblings with a common parent through adoption).

You will need the following:
Your Ontario driver's licence, a Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Motor Vehicle, the Safety Standards Certificate (please note that this is not necessary for spouse-to-spouse transfers), the Vehicle Ownership Permit with the completed section on the back, and, if you are also transferring the licence plates, the completed plate transfer declaration (this is required on spouse-to-spouse transfers in order to exempt them from the Safety Standards Certificate).
Note: Within a 12-month period, only one exempt transfer of the same vehicle between family members is permitted.
